Character Counter
Some limits count characters, some count bytes and some count emoji as two. This counter shows all of them side by side and warns you when you pass a limit you set.
Runs entirely in your browser. Your input and files are not uploaded to any server.
How to use
- Paste or type your text.
- Optionally enter a character limit, such as 160 for an SMS or 155 for a meta description.
- Read the remaining count and the breakdown of letters, digits, spaces and bytes.
Examples
Set the limit to 155 to stay inside the length search engines usually display.
A family emoji 👨👩👧 counts as 1 grapheme but 5 code points and 18 UTF-8 bytes, which explains why some apps reject “short” text.

Frequently asked questions
What is a grapheme?
A grapheme is what a reader sees as a single character. One emoji or one Arabic letter with diacritics can be made of several code points; graphemes count them as one.
Why show bytes?
Databases, SMS gateways and some APIs limit the size in bytes. Arabic letters take 2 bytes each in UTF-8 and most emoji take 4.
